ABOUT SCOTTISH TERRIERS
Nickname: Scottie Dogs

DESCRIPTION
Our Scottie dogs are all of the type that have a beautiful blue-black coat that is typically compact, course and stiff with a soft downy undercoat that makes them hardy in cold climates despite their small size. Scottish Terriers have short legs, but are still a very active, athletic little dogs. They reach a mature height of 10-11 inches and weigh between 19 & 23 lbs. Sharply pricked ears, large teeth and a large nose, make the Scottie a superb watchdog and hunter. They have dark shiny eyes with an almond shape. The Scottie tail is medium length, straight to slightly curved. The Scottie is a hardy, lovable, character that starts life playful and friendly, and matures into a very noble friend for life. Their life expectancy is 12-15 years.

PERSONALITY
Scottish Terriers are hardy, brave, alert and very lovable; they are full of charm and character. They need firm but gentle handling from an early age as they are otherwise prone to being stubborn. Scottie owners must establish their leadership right from the start or the dog will develop uncharacteristic behavior problems such as snapping, sulking, stubborness and obsessive barking. That being said, this breed is very sensitive and must not be over criticized or disciplined harshly; firm confident commands used consistently will be very effective. Do not play aggressive tug of war or fighting games with your Scottie dog as they can the become too aggressive with other family members who have not established dominance over them. They love to play ball games, participate in running sports and walk proudly along side you. Usually, Scotties are not recommended for families with younger children. Young children just can not display the kind of pack leader mentality that is needed and the Scottie soon takes over the house!

HEALTH

Prone to Scottie Cramp, which is a mobility disorder, Von Willebrand's Disease, flea allergy, skin and jaw problem. They are often difficult whelpers. The living conditions required for a Scottish Terrier are not extensive; they are fine living in an apartment as long as it not overly hot. They do well in cool climates.

EXERCISE
The daily walk is a necessity for your Scottie Dog. Though they love to play, they have an important inborn instinct to walk with their beloved leader. A mixture of walking on leash, running in the park and game playing will fullfill your Scottie and prevent him from developing any undesirable behavior.

GROOMING
Scottish Terriers have very course, wiry coats that will need daily brushing with extra combing at shedding season. The long body hair should be professionally trimmed every 6 months along with having the face trimmed. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done as necessary to keep your Scottie from accumulating dirt and debris in its' long coat.
